Our Story: Championing Adoption of Microsoft Power Platform at City of Chicago
Partnering with the City of Chicago during COVID-19. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, DH Systems Solutions partnered with the City of Chicago’s Public Health Department to tackle unprecedented operational challenges. From mass vaccination sites to at-home vaccine programs, we helped the city respond with agility and innovation when it mattered most.
Transforming City Operations with Power Apps. Public Health’s adoption of Power Platform began with a focus on cutting bureaucracy and improving efficiency. One standout success was transforming a paper-based vendor invoice approval process. Previously, payments were delayed by weeks or even months due to email back-and-forths and manual signatures. With Power Apps, we created a streamlined digital solution that now processes hundreds of millions of dollars in invoices, reducing approval times to just days. Inspired by this win, the department expanded Power Apps to automate hiring workflows, streamline contract approvals, and tackle other inefficiencies, unlocking the platform’s potential to drive meaningful change across city operations.
Building Power Platform Capabilities in Public Health. To build on these successes, we partnered with Public Health to establish a Center of Excellence (COE) for Power Platform. Initially, our team led the development of impactful solutions, but we quickly shifted into a coaching role, empowering staff to take ownership of their Power Platform journey. Teams began managing their own app updates, fielding questions from colleagues, and driving innovation independently. This transformation made Public Health a self-sustaining hub of low-code expertise and a model for operational excellence.
Expanding Power Platform Adoption Citywide. The success in Public Health paved the way for a citywide expansion. Chicago’s central IT department, inspired by the results and foundation built within Public Health, committed to enterprise-wide premium licensing for Microsoft Power Platform. This investment is now fueling the adoption of low-code solutions across city departments, scaling the impact of innovation and operational transformation citywide.
